Experimental Bike Commuting

about

Experimental Bike Commuting is my attempt to make the transition from lazy, inactive driver to bicycle commuter while also documenting this process to aid those who want to make the change, as well.

It’s not as easy as just waking up one day and deciding to pedal to work instead of driving, not if your commute will be more than 2 or 3 miles anyway.

The Bike:

  • Red 1980 Zebrakenko Storm: $140
  • New Tires & Brakes: $56
  • Bike Computer: $22
  • Total Cost(3/31/10): $218

Potential $ Savings:

  • Distance travelled (miles): ~44*
  • Avg. price 3/30/10 ($/gallon): ~2.65
  • Car MPG (miles/gallon): ~26
  • Total Spent since 3/29/10 ($): ~4.48

*This includes only miles spent going to and from school, as that is the goal of my personal challenge. Miles travelled outside of the drive between my home and school are not taken into account.

The Challenge:

  • Travel the 11 miles from home to school by bike at the beginning of the fall semester.
  • over 100 days left…
